Party Poker has upgraded its poker playing software and at the same time it has modified its policies regarding play money. In a statement the company said that thery had recently implemented a new policy that restricted play money accounts to a maximum number of chips. They pointed out that in revising the policy they were considering the vast majority of play money players. The intention of this move was to prevent the practice of moving chips between accounts during periods when not playing regular poker. They went on to say that whilst this might have an adverse effect on some players, it would be better for all play money players in the long term. They also said that their decision was final and would not be reversed.

The reason for this decision and its implications follow. Any player who signs up to an account on PartyPoker receives 1,000 play chips. Accounts may be replenished two times a day, each time with an additional 1,000 chips. Previously by constantly replenishing accounts, they could be built up to vast amounts of chips.

The transfer of chips between players was not allowed but players found that they could surreptitiously transfer chips by deliberately losing them to each other during a game. Furthermore, certain websites such as Chip Empire set up and offered to trade in and transfer PartyPoker chips. The result was that huge numbers of chips were generated.

Under the new rules players are allowed a maximum of 250,000 chips, and players with more than this had them taken away.
