Poker Tips: Hedging Your Bets
Hedging bets in poker is not something common to most poker players, but it something that will always bring long term returns. Recently the writer and poker player Marcus Bateman described the subject and here is an outline of what he had to say.
He explained that hedging bets means balancing risks by making bet contrary to your main bet so that if your main bet fails the hedge will make up for the loss. Just as in financial markets, hedging bets in poker is very important; poker players who are good at hedging their bets who will make the most money over the long term.
According to Marcus Bateman , hedging you bets in poker means becoming proficient at all forms of poker and playing them, rather than sticking to one, say Hold’em. To illustrate this he gives an example of a poker player in the 1980s in Las Vegas. The game would have been seven card Stud and you could have continued to play that until the present, however you would have missed opportunities. For instance, if you had become skilled in Hold’em you would have won much more money during the Hold’em boom. If you had invested effort into Omaha you would have had a tremendous advantage over recent years as most Omaha players are very weak; a strong Omaha player could have cleaned up.
Furthermore, given the increasing popularity of mixed poker games such as HORSE, if you were proficient at all forms of poker you would be making a lot of money.
He pointed out that adopting this hedging strategy would have reduced your earnings from Stud, but overall you would have gained considerably. It is important to move with the times.
