Outside the casino the temperatures were sub zero and the wind was bitterly cold, and it had started to snow but the Copenhagen locals are used to that kind of weather in February. Inside the action was hot as the Copenhagen leg of the European Poker Tour got underway yesterday the 16th February and 191 players turned up to play eight levels of poker on Day 1a.

The venue is the Casino Copenhagen at the Radisson SAS Scandinavia Hotel, which is in fact the only casino in the whole of the city. The tournament is a buy in for 50,000 DKK (Danish kroner) which is about £5,840 and about half the entrants were from the Nordic region

The players included many top professionals including the winner of the Prague leg Jan Skampa, the winner of the high roller event at the EPT Deauville Thomas Kabrhel, Johnny Lodden, Peter Hedlund and Annette Obrestad to name just a few. These guys must be getting like real old friends as they meet each other so often.

By the end of the day 113 players were left and the player with the most chips was a Canadian, Andrew Pantling with 155,800 of them.  In second place was Johnny Ostbjerg  with 117,000 chips, followed by Christian Togsverd with 116,100, Patrik Kaltrud with 113,200 and Kristian Kofoed with110,600.

The leader Andrew Pantling was a PokerStars qualifier.

It is anticipated that at least 200 additional players will compete on Day 1b and the final table starts on Sunday 21st February. Amongst the esteemed players will be Peter Eastgate,  Bertrand Grospellier, Sebastian Ruthenberg and Luca Pagano.

In addition to the main event there are a number of two day Freezeout tournaments. These include a 5,000 DKK, a 10,000 DKK and a 15,000 DKK.
