Phil Hellmuth goes for his 12th WSOP Bracelet

Yesterday we brought you news of how Phil Ivey’s eighth WSOP gold
bracelet win had him snapping at the heels of Phil Hellmuth, the man
who has the ever highest count of WSOP bracelets ever; eleven of them.
In fact it seems that there is a realistic possibility of the eleven turning into twelve in the very near future. He is taking part in the $1,500 pot limit Omaha Hi Lo split 8 or better.
The original number of entries to this event was 847 but that has now been pared down to the final fifteen and Phil Hellmuth is one of them and he holds 331,000 chips which is the fourth highest chip count. The only players ahead of him are Ryan Karp with 564,000 chips, Steve Jelinek with 538,000 chips and Joel Ettedgi with 419,000 chips.
Unlike Phil Ivey’s bracelets which he won for a wide range of different forms of poker, to date all of Phil Hellmuth’s bracelets have been won at Texas Hold’em so should he win one for Omaha he too will be able to claim fame as a poker all-rounder.
Also ahead of Ivey and behind Hellmuth in the WSOP bracelet count are Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson who hold ten bracelets apiece.
So far, in addition to this event, Hellmuth has cashed in two WSOP events this year and has collected around $40,000 which to him is mere pocket money. If he wins his current event he will add yet another quarter of a million dollars to his to his tournament tally.
Born in 1964 Hellmuth is older school than many of today’s top new guns, but when he won his first WSOP man event in 1989, at 25 years he was then the youngest person to ever do so. His total winnings from tournaments are around nine million dollars.
