Day 1C of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event has finished. Last year day 1CĀ  proved to be a relatively unpopular day with participants and less than 1,000 players entered, but this year was it was the opposite and attracted more players than either of the other two opening days. 2,314 players signed up for day 1C which is almost as many as the total number of players combined, 2,614, who competed in the previous two days.

By the end of the day there were 700 fewer and some important names were amongst them. Huck Seed, the winner of the Tournament of Champions, was eliminated in the first hour. Other surprising eliminations were Phil Hellmuth, Tom Dwan, Neil Channing, Jeff Madsen, Dario Minieri and Men Nguyen.

Some of the big names that made it through to the end were Joe Cada the current champion, Lex Veldhuis, Daniel Negreanu, David Williams, Johnny Chan, Paul Wasicka and Patrik Antonius.

Two of these runners up of previous Main Events. These were David Williams who finished second in the 2004 Main Event, and Paul Wasicka who came second in 2006. Afterwards said that back in 2006 he had failed to realise how important winning the Main Event was and so he had played as though he had nothing to lose. He is has now modified his game and is hoping for a second chance to collect the most coveted poker bracelet of all.

At the head of the chip count was Mathiu Sauriol with 168,900 chips followed by Johnny Chan with 163,700, Andrew LiporaceĀ  with 155,350, Joe Monroe with 152,000 and Lauren Kling with 149,650.

Johnny Chan has won ten WSOP bracelets taking his first in 1985 and his most recent in 2005, though he has not yet made a final table at the WSOP. Sitting in second place so far in chip counts may be this will turn out to be his year, though there is a long, long way to go.
