Naturally the WSOP does have an all female tournament, the $1,000 Ladies No Limit Texas Hold’em Tournament (though this year it was infiltrated by men).  However, as entry is generally restricted, many consider that the Ladies’ Bracelet is less prestigious that other WSOP bracelets for similar tournaments.

Why is it that se few female players take part in open WSOP events? In fact on average the number of women who enter large tournaments is less than five percent of the total field. The fact is that little is done to make women feel comfortable at these events which are often over-sexist. At the WSOP in the Rio in Las Vegas even the majority of ladies’ toilets are taken over for the male players.

Attitudes of many of the male players also do little to encourage female participation.  To say that many male players are sexist and intimidatory would be to make an understatement. Of course poker is not a gentle game, but over recent years a good number of women have demonstrated that they are at least equal to the men.

It would be good for the game and the image that it presents to the world if it was made more female friendly. It seems that the WSOP management is coming under substantial pressure to move in that direction.
