Gloria Balding’s Poker Tournament Roundup
Gloria Balding is one of the modern glamorous poker celebrities famous for her reportage and media presentations of the game. She spends much of her time moving from poker tournament to poker tournament and has recently reviewed what she calls the top five – the five that should be played by every player – and this is a summary of what she had so say about them.
The WSOP she described as the bucket list tournament. The reasons are that you can win life changing amounts of money without winning a single event. Playing in the main event is, she says, just about every poker player’s dream.
The Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure is the next on her list. The reasons are the prize pool and that it is the crown jewel. It is also an excellent tournament to which to take your partner. While you enjoy the game, she (or he) can enjoy the many delights on offer in the Caribbean.
Next she lists the World Poker Tournament Championship. This has a $25,000 buy in and she says that every table is really tough. Everybody, she says, needs to play in a big buy in tournament like this.
The fourth on her list is the World Championship of Online Poker. She says that last year 2,000 players took part and the total prize pool was $10,720,000. She says that it has the same reach as the WSOP and it is the online equivalent to it.
Finally she mentions the World Series of Poker Europe which this year takes place in the Empire Casino in London on 14th September. She does wonder whether a bracelet as this tournament is as prestigious as a WSOP bracelet, though people who have won them consider them to be equivalent. She enjoys the small fields and the interactions that this encourages. It provides the opportunity to play the very top players in a small venue.
