The new system has been set out to be fairer to all poker players. The previous system took no account of the size of the field or the size of the buy in. This led to certain anomalies. For instance someone winning an event with say 900 players would receive the same score as someone winning an event with a field of only 300. In the new system the points awarded will reflect the field size and will to some extent take account of the blinds, though all blinds over €1,000 will be treated the same.

Players who cash in main events cashes receive100 percent their points for events with fields of between 500 and 1,000. This is reduced to 80% for fields smaller that 500 and is increased to 120% for fields larger than 1,000. In side events players receive 100% of points for fields from 40 to 250, with the same reduction and increase for smaller and larger fields. No points will be awarded for events with fewer than 16 players.

The changes have been made in response to requests from players and the aim was to create a much more level playing field and not allowing someone to gain the trophy by just winning one major event.

As the EPT awards were not introduced before the sixth season was well underway this is the first time that players have been able to compete from the beginning of the season. In addition to the prestigious Player of the Year trophy, winners receive a free seat and expenses for the opening event of the following season.
